Each hospice volunteer has the ability to make a significant difference in the lives of our patients. Giving the gift of friendship and companionship to someone else is truly one of the most rewarding feelings a person can experience. It's impossible to overstate the impact this service can have in the lives of others.
As a hospice volunteer, time commitments may vary. It may be as simple as a phone call a couple times a week. Some larger commitments may include visiting the patient in their home and reading to them, taking a walk, playing an instrument, or simply giving them someone to talk to. We, at Everest, are dedicated to providing the best and most comfortable, end-of-life experience for our patients and their caregivers.
THE COMMON TRAITS OF EFFECTIVE HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS
Part of what makes hospice volunteers impactful and important members of our patient's care team is their unique personality and life perspective. While each volunteer is unique, there are several common traits that are indicative of an effective hospice volunteer:
- A spirit of compassion, understanding, and respect
- Respect for any and all ways of life, cultural customs, and religious views
- Keen understanding of personal limits and boundaries
- The ability to listen and be comfortable in silence
